Celebrating 10 Years of Lympstone Manor – Michael Caines’ Journey from Historic Estate to Michelin-Starred Hotel

Marking ten years since Michael Caines MBE purchased this historic estate

In today’s fast-paced world, taking time to pause and reflect feels like a rare privilege. This autumn, as the season turns, we look back on the vineyard’s harvest and the many seasons that have come before.

It was only ten years ago that Michael first set eyes on what was then Courtlands, a Grade II listed Georgian manor, weathered by time, yet standing proudly above the Exe Estuary. The house whispered of faded grandeur, its walls in need of care, its grounds longing to be renewed. Where others might have seen decline, Michael saw possibility.

Just ten years ago, on 15th September 2015, Michael purchased Lympstone Manor, formerly Courtlands. At that time, the house was in need of significant restoration, and the surrounding estate required careful redevelopment. Guided by his vision, Michael set out to create a luxury country house hotel and restaurant, while also planting a vineyard laying the foundations of a legacy that has blossomed into what we now know as Lympstone Manor.

“When I first walked through the doors of what was then Courtlands, I knew it could become something truly special. This past decade has been about bringing that vision to life, creating a place where guests can experience not only the finest food and hospitality, but also the spirit and beauty of this incredible location.”  Michael Caines MBE

From November 2015, Michael embarked on a journey of transformation. With a team of master craftsmen and women, he oversaw every detail: restoring original features, blending heritage with contemporary luxury, and breathing new life into the estate. His vision stretched beyond the house itself, with plans to plant a vineyard on the south-facing slopes, a dream that has since blossomed into award-winning wines, made here on the estate.

In April 2017, Lympstone Manor opened its doors. Within six months, the restaurant was awarded a Michelin star, a recognition of the artistry and passion poured into every detail. Since then, the estate has flourished: the planting of a vineyard, the addition of our luxurious Shepherd Huts, the Pool House Restaurant, leisure facilities, and a programme of events and menus celebrating the finest local produce.
