South Australia Wine Dinner
This August, we are delighted to be pairing Michael Caines’s exquisite cuisine with the wines of South Australia. South Australia is at the very heart of historic wine production in this vast continent and is responsible for approximately half of the country’s wine production. It’s not only about the quantity however, there is some exceptional quality here and some of the most recognised and respected producers hail from this state.
It also boasts some of the oldest vines in the world with some of these found in the Barrossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley and the Adelaide Hills, through their isolation they escaped the massive phyllorexa plague that decimated firstly the vineyards of Europe and then the rest of the world including Australia’s east coast in the latter half of the nineteenth century.
The first commercial wine was produced in 1843 from a vineyard near Mount Barker and by the turn of the century wine production had exploded but in reality would have had very little appeal with modern day styles with sweetness and strength at the forefront as many table wines were fortified. It took over a century for things to change however with a booming Australian economy in the 1960’s alongside a shift in winemaking technology and a renewed interest in the country for wine consumption the focus turned to the wine styles that we all enjoy today.
We are thrilled to be pairing Michael Caines’s refined cuisine with the fabulous food friendly wines from this famed and very beautiful part of Australia. There are plenty of different wines to choose from whether it’s a powerful Barossa Valley shiraz, a classic cabernet sauvignon from Coonawarra, a cool climate riesling from the Adelaide Hills or a sparkling wine from Piccadilly Valley. The Head Sommelier will be serving some of the very best examples available for this event which is not to be missed with each wine presented before the relevant course is served.
The evening will commence at 6.30 pm with canapés and a glass of wine upon arrival, with guests taking seats at 7.00 pm in one of our elegant dining rooms for a superbly matched menu designed by Michael and prepared by our kitchen team.
