Northern Italy Wine Dinner
This November, we are delighted to be pairing Michael Caines’s exquisite cuisine with the wines of Northern Italy. Italy has a rich and diverse winemaking history dating back over 2000 years and today is the worlds largest wine producing country followed by France then Spain. Unbelievably Italy has over 2,000 different grape varietals however many of these are on the brink of extinction. With the exception of Tuscany the wines from Northern Italy are not only represented in some the most well-known regions in terms of quality which include arguably two of the most important in Piedmont and the Veneto but there are a string of others including Friuli-Venezia-Giulia, Trentino-Alto Adige and Lombardy which also produce fabulous wines.
The geography and the temperate weather varies enormously across the North of Italy and it is hard to summarise with vineyards planted almost sea level in Emilia-Romagna and then up to 1200 metres in the Alto-Adige making them some of the highest vineyard sites in Europe. It does mean that there is a vast array of different wine styles that are being produced regionally, some of which are simply well known due to the volume produced and others because of their reputation and superior quality.
Whether it’s one of the amazing sparkling wines from Franciacorta in Lombardy, one of the intensely powerful red wines from Barolo or Barbaresco in Piedmont or a crisp and fragrant Pinot Grigio from the Friuli-Venezia-Giulia. There is no doubt that the entire region has an incredible array of fantastic food friendly wines.
Our Sommelier team will match a selection of stunning wines with Michaels seasonal menu which showcase the very best examples from a number of the top appellations and producers in this large and diverse wine region. Each wine will be presented before the relevant course is served.
The evening will commence at 6.30 pm with canapés and a glass of wine upon arrival, with guests taking seats at 7.00 pm in one of our elegant dining rooms for a superbly matched menu designed by Michael and prepared by our kitchen team.
