English Wine Dinner

25th May

We are very pleased to be hosting an evening to showcase a small selection of outstanding English wines  at a time when the wine industry in this country is at a point of really being noticed even though wine has been produced and vineyards cultivated as long ago as the first century AD by the Romans. Currently there are over 700 vineyards planted in England and that number is increasing rapidly. Whilst the majority of sites are located in the Southeast, specifically Sussex, Hampshire and Kent where there are over 70% of all vineyards established, there are now sites dotted all over the country. While there is even a commercial site in North Yorkshire,  due to the key factors in relation to the site selection when establishing a vineyard such as temperature within the vineyard, annual rainfall and growing degree days, most commercial vineyards are located in the south of England.

To date the English wine industry has mostly been appreciated for its sparkling wine production and quite rightly so with numerous awards won in internationally recognised competitions like the Decanter World Wine Awards, undoubtedly the most influential of its kind, with its panel of expert judges from around the globe. At the 2021 DWWA the United Kingdom won not only one of the highly coveted “Best in Show” medals, there were also 2 Platinum, 9 Gold, 81 Silver and 51 Bronze awards which is a remarkable achievement. Interestingly 2 of the Golds went to still wines which highlights that there is also the possibility to create wonderful wines without the bubbles. Good quality wine does come at a price mainly due to a relatively small scale production as well as a marginal climate and pricey real estate but the driving future factor is quality and we are certainly starting to see more and more of that.

The dinner will be hosted by James Lambert the Managing Director from Lyme Bay Winery who will introduce a selection of stunning wines paired with Michaels seasonal menu which showcase the very best examples from a number of different vineyards across England. The evening will commence at 6.30pm with canapés and a glass of fizz, taking seats at 7.00pm in the elegant Mamhead dining room for a superbly matched menu designed by Michael and prepared by our kitchen team. We look forward to welcoming you to Lympstone Manor for this wonderful evening of food and wine.
