06.11 Rhone Valley Wine Dinner

This winter we are delighted to be pairing Michael Caines’s exquisite cuisine with the wines of Rhone Valley, a vast area of vineyards which stretches over 125 miles from Vienne in the north to the beautiful city of Avignon in the south and has the mighty Rhone river cutting a swathe through the landscape before it empties into the Mediterranean.

The region is quite distinctly split into two halves and with higher rainfall in the North, the countryside is much greener where oak forests and fruit orchards mingle with the vineyards and is where the great red wines of Hermitage and Cote Rotie are produced from the Syrah grape and the fabulous white wines of Condrieu made from Viognier but also not forgetting the wines made from Marsanne and Roussanne. As you head south the landscape changes as it is much drier and you see vineyards interspersed with a medley of herbal shrubs and olive trees, down here the for the red wines the Grenache grape dominates and is the king in Châteauneuf-du-Pape whilst the whites made from Clairette and Bourboulenc are ever increasing in popularity.

Our Sommelier team will match a selection of stunning wines with Michaels seasonal menu which showcase the very best examples from a number of the top appellations and producers in this large and diverse wine region, this time of year is perfect for the intensely flavoured, concentrated red wines and the rich and unctuous whites that demonstrate both elegance and length. You will be guided through the dinner by good friend Patrick Pigny from Enotria & Coe who will present each wine before the relevant course is served.

 

The evening will commence at 6.30pm with canapés and a glass of Brut de Grandmont “Collection Particuliere” nv a rare sparkling wine made in the Rhone Valley wine region, taking seats at 7.00pm in the elegant Mamhead dining room for a superbly matched menu designed by Michael and prepared by our kitchen team.
